CLEVELAND—Lovena Grillot, a rising senior studying Sculpture + Expanded Media at the Cleveland Institute of Art, presents AN ODE TO EVERYONE, a pop-up exhibition featuring 35 Ohio-based artists of all ages who are practicing in all mediums.
AN ODE TO EVERYONE provides space for artists struggling to get into exhibitions due to age or experience restrictions. The exhibition also aims to help artists struggling to find a place to step into the art world as well as artists looking to expand their practice.
"I hope this exhibition encourages artists to continue looking for opportunities and motivates them to keep making great art," Grillot says. "For the community, I want them to continue supporting local artists and attending local exhibitions. Art is educational in a unique way. It shares perspective, experiences and lives that the audience can relate to or learn from."
AN ODE TO EVERYONE will be on view August 1–3 during regular business hours at Cuyahoga County Public Library's South Euclid-Lyndhurst Branch (1876 S. Green Road, South Euclid). An artists’ reception will be held at 2 to 5pm Sunday, August 2. Awards will be presented at 4pm during the reception.
AN ODE TO EVERYONE follows four free workshops led by Grillot in April at the library. The first workshop taught high school students how to create 3D sculptures in Blender in the computer lab at the CCPL. The second workshop focused on teaching adults 18 and up how to make portraits with chalk pastel. The third workshop was for students in middle school to learn hand sewing. Lastly, a watercolor workshop was hosted for ages 60 and up.
All four workshops focused on accessibility for space and materials to make art. They aimed to teach new techniques, offer quality materials for free and have a space to make art. Students were allowed to take home excess materials ensuring they could continue to create after the workshops.
AN ODE TO EVERYONE is the culmination of Grillot's efforts. The exhibition offers attendees an opportunity to network and connect with hobbyists, practicing artists and enthusiasts alike. It also offers the community a way to access art in a comfortable and familiar way by showing it inside a local library. It's not just a show for collectors and artists, it's also intended for families, library patrons and all Clevelanders.
Grillot is a multidisciplinary artist who focuses on material exploration and creating new pieces by combining mediums. She enjoys seeing what every process brings and how she can convey messages with material. More of Grillot's work can be found on Instagram at @winterscrispkisses.
Grillot organized AN ODE TO EVERYONE and her workshops through CIA's Creativity Works program, which is made possible by the generous support of the Fenn Educational Fund and the G.R. Lincoln Family Foundation. Creativity Works is a self-initiated internship program with the goal of supporting a student's professional development. Participating students create proposals that align with their long-term professional goals.
