FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 28, 2023

CLEVELAND—Twenty-three Visual Arts students from the Cleveland Institute of Art are excited to announce Like Moths to ..., a multidisciplinary, student-curated exhibition that explores light.

Work in Like Moths to ... will examine different meanings of light, from a source of illumination to a categorization of weight or descriptor for emotion. Students considered what serves as a light or inspiration in their artistic practices and invite viewers to discover how that shines through in their work.

Like Moths to ... will be exhibited April 28–30 at The Hildebrandt Building (3619 Walton Ave., Cleveland). An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7pm Friday, April 28. Weekend hours are from noon to 5pm Saturday and Sunday, April 29–30.

Mediums featured in Like Moths to ... include paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, glass, fibers and metal. Students were given free rein to creatively install their work in the exhibition space, which features floor-to-ceiling windows that allow an abundance of natural light as well as dark rooms and corners that invite artistic experimentation.

“I’m excited to see the artwork in the space. A lot of students made pieces that specifically are suited for the space provided at the Hildebrandt. It should be really cool,” says Tristen Kovacs, a Painting major and participating artist.

The participating artists are Jules Ahern, Rachel Barnes, Johntae Chapman, Brandon Crider, Isabella Dombrowski, M Dailey, Janoi Daley, Grace Gielink, Layla Harris, Zoie Jarem, Zion Monice Jones, Kayla Knepper, Tristen Kovacs, Tamsyn Kuehnert, Danielle Larson, Nat Lenington, Nic Meinhardt, James Negron, DeAnne Smith, Ian Smith, Soleil White, Tumnus Rex and USE_OF_A_BODY.

To meet the artists, follow the exhibition on Instagram at @likemoths2.

Like Moths to ... is the capstone exhibition from CIA’s The Role of the Artist as Producer course taught by Amber Kempthorn and Jessica Pinsky. Students majoring in Drawing, Painting, Printmaking and Sculpture + Expanded Media curate and develop a group exhibition that embodies the work of a gallery and professional practice. Students collaboratively execute this project while practicing professionalism and gaining knowledge useful to working artists. The experience also exposes the students and their work to Cleveland's arts community.
