CIA exhibit urges a look across the threshold

CLEVELAND (Ohio) – Portals_Thresholds, the spring exhibition at Cleveland Institute of Art’s Reinberger Gallery, is on view March 29 through June 15, 2018.

This mind-altering show will highlight the work of five contemporary artists operating both in and out of the realm of simulated reality.

An opening reception takes place from 6 to 8pm March 29 at CIA, 11610 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, Ohio, 44106. Admission is free.

Featured inside the gallery will be artists Sara Ludy; Rachel Rossin; and Daniel Wickerham and Malcolm Lomax, who collaborate as Wickerham & Lomax. CIA’s digital media-mesh screen on the west façade of the Gund building will also show new-media works by artist Rafaël Rozendaal, who will premiere a new website there weekly and be on view daily from 5 to 9pm.

The exhibition is an imaginative, sometimes witty plunge into the fantastic. The works address themes relating to science fiction and artifice. Mediums will include virtual reality, video, sound, animation, sculpture, painting, and more. Together, the work of featured artists will test the boundaries of perception.

Sara Ludy’s works include websites, animation, video, sculpture, and audio-visual performance. She uses the online virtual world Second Life to make images of domestic interiors, landscapes, and other scenes that are familiar, yet feel otherworldly. Ludy is represented by bitforms gallery, New York.

Rachel Rossin lives in New York City. She was recently the subject of a solo exhibition at the Contemporary Art Centre, Riga, Latvia, curated by Art in General. She is acclaimed for her groundbreaking work in virtual reality as well as for her insightful paintings. Rossin is represented by ZieherSmith, New York.

Rafaël Rozendaal is a Dutch-Brazilian visual artist who uses the internet as his canvas. He’s best known for making websites, which attract some 60 million unique visitors a year, and he also creates drawings, installations, tapestries and haiku. He also created BYOB (Bring Your Own Beamer), an open source, DIY curatorial format that is spreading across the world rapidly. Rozendaal is represented by Postmasters Gallery, New York.

Wickerham & Lomax is the art collaborative formed by Baltimore artists Daniel Wickerham and Malcolm Lomax. Their practice is based on the accelerated exchange of frivolous information, gossip, and codified language that crystallizes into accessible forms in hopes of giving dignity to that exchange. Wickerham & Lomax is represented by American Medium, New York.

Reinberger Gallery hours are:

Monday-Thursday: 10am-5pm

Friday: 10am-9pm

Saturday-Sunday: 12-5pm
