The final installment in Kaurismäki’s Proletariat trilogy, The Match Factory Girl can be interpreted as a reworked allegory of the Anderson tale Little Match Girl, but Kaurismäki substitutes tragic death with rightful vengeance as his vision for justice and redemption in the bleakly comic story of a young woman with nothing to look forward to in life discovering that she has been impregnated by a man who wants nothing to do with it.
