France, Italy | 1994 | Michele Soavi
Who doesn’t love a zombie romance? This cult horror-comedy by Michele Soavi, who is credited for continuing the traditions of Italian horror in the ‘90s, was based on Tiziano Sclavi's novel of the same name. Starring Rupert Everett, we follow the caretaker of a small cemetery, who is tasked with ‘putting down’ the rising dead, until he falls in love with one of them. Simultaneously gruesome and sweet, the film displays striking gothic imagery and an absurdist, existential streak reminiscent of Lynch and Kafka. Some subtitles. 103 min.
