CLEVELAND—Jon Jackson, a senior in Drawing and Printmaking at the Cleveland Institute of Art, has partnered with ATNSC: Center for Art, Practice and Inquiry to present Check the Expiration Date, a group exhibition exploring food insecurity, access and convenience.
With food being something that can bring people together, Check the Expiration Date encourages viewers to reflect on the importance of what we consume daily and how that can impact who we are. Jackson also seeks to highlight the importance of hospitality through shared connections of convenience store runs to things like enjoying your favorite comfort foods.
"Along with making the work, it’s really allowed me to be mindful of the things I would otherwise just be a consumer of, and being aware of what’s catching my attention," Jackson says of the exhibition.
Check the Expiration Date opens during a reception from 1 to 5pm Sunday, November 8 at ATNSC's Akhsó Gallery (11808 Cromwell Ave., Cleveland). The exhibition will remain on view through Monday, November 30.
The exhibition features artwork by Jackson as well as interdisciplinary artist Scout Bach and CIA Life Sciences Illustration student Jordan Rose through a series of drawings, paintings and other works.
"We are honored to host the important conversation catalyzed by the works from these artists—individually and collectively," says M. Carmen Lane, artist, founder, director and chief curator at ATNSC. "Jackson's communal and relational curatorial approach aligns with our values and demonstrates our interconnectivity as a community.
"The gallery is named in honor of my grandmother, who was an educator and supporter of Cleveland-based Black artists," Lane continues. "It is significant at the five-year mark of our gallery that we close an exhibition honoring the late Black woman artist Ernestine Taliaferro (a resident of Cleveland's Glenville neighborhood) and move to hosting emerging artists from our community. Jackson's work continues to mark a lineage of artists from our city thinking about place, the environments we find ourselves in and the role art plays in responding to the moment."

Check the Expiration Date was created through the Creativity Works program, which is made possible by the generous support of the Fenn Educational Fund and the G.R. Lincoln Family Foundation. Creativity Works is a self-initiated internship program with the goal of supporting students' professional development. Participating students create proposals that align with their long-term professional goals.
