FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 12, 2026
CLEVELAND—The Cinematheque at the Cleveland Institute of Art welcomes noted actress, film historian and author Illeana Douglas for a screening of The Women at 2pm Sunday, October 18 in CIA's Peter B. Lewis Theater. The film stars Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell, who lead an all-female cast in this classic comedy from 1939 directed by George Cukor.
Following the screening, Douglas will participate in a conversation with Cinematheque director David Huffman about the film and her new book, Author of Jungle Red: The Making of MGM's The Women, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at the groundbreaking film and the inner workings of Old Hollywood. Following the Q&A, she will sign copies in the lobby. Books will be available for purchase.
Douglas has appeared in classic films like Goodfellas, Cape Fear, To Die For, Grace of My Heartand Ghost World. Her latest, The Greatest Man in The World, will be released in 2027. On television, Douglas received an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Angela on Six Feet Under, and credits include Goliath, Search Party, Shrill and Entourage.
Douglas is the granddaughter of two-time Academy Award–winning actor Melvyn Douglas, who started his career at the Cleveland Playhouse. A film historian and essayist, she interviewed a pantheon of cinema greats for Turner Classic Movies; participated in scores of film documentaries, including The Making of The Wizard of Oz, Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed, CNN: The Movies, Greatest Cult Films of All Time, The True Adventures of Raoul Walsh and Kino Lorber’s Pioneers: First Women Filmmakers, which she executive-produced and hosted; and is a contributor to Joe Dante’s Trailers From Hell.
Her books include I Blame Dennis Hopper: And Other Stories from a Life Lived In and Out of the Movies (2015) and Connecticut in the Movies: From Dream Houses to Dark Suburbia (2023).
The Women is the final film of the Cinematheque's Sundays with Shearer film series. Norma Shearer was one of MGM’s biggest stars throughout the 1930s. While this Oscar-winning actress once ruled Hollywood, she is far from a household name today. Sundays with Sheaer invites fans to rediscover the star through four of her films.
