CLEVELAND—Award-winning documentary This is Pike County, directed by Cleveland filmmaker Laura Paglin, will make its Cleveland premiere at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque at 6:30pm Thursday, August 27. The screening will be followed by an in-person discussion with the filmmaker. Tickets are available here.

Produced by Oscar-winning filmmaker Thomas Lennon, whose Academy Award-nominated documentary Knife Skills chronicled Cleveland's acclaimed EDWINS restaurant, This is Pike County grew out of Paglin's visit to Pike County after the 2016 Rhoden family murders thrust the rural southern Ohio community into the national spotlight.

Expecting to document the tragedy's aftermath, Paglin instead found herself drawn to people whose lives rarely make the news. To gain deeper, uncompromised access to these untold stories, Paglin lived at the very budget motel featured in the film. The resulting documentary is an intimate, raw portrait that lingers on what it means to come of age in a place left behind.

James Faust, artistic director of the Dallas International Film Festival, praised the film’s empathetic approach to its subjects: "You put a lens to folks not often seen ... a voice to those we should take care of and listen to."

Since its 2025 world premiere, This is Pike County has received multiple jury awards and has screened for audiences across the country.
