Chartered in 1882, The Cleveland Institute of Art began in the attic of the Old Cleveland City Hall with just one teacher and one student. After several moves, the Art School, as it had long been known, officially became known as The Cleveland Institute of Art in 1949 and in 1956, it moved into its present University Circle location. In 1981 the Institute purchased a former Ford automobile assembly factory, now listed on the National Register of Historical Places in Ohio. Renovated and renamed the Joseph McCullough Center for the Visual Arts, it houses the departments of painting, glass, ceramics, graphic design and illustration, photography/video, T.I.M.E. (digital and time based media), and sculpture. Remaining in the George Gund Building on East Boulevard are the departments of metals/jewelry, drawing, industrial design, fiber, printmaking, and medical illustration, as well as foundation and liberal arts (academic) classes.
