Thursday night concert series rocks CIA's neighborhood

Live entertainment on plaza every Thursday through Aug. 28

The Beat UPTOWN, a free Thursday night summer concert series, runs through August 28 on the plaza at the corner of Mayfield Road and Euclid Avenue, directly across the street from CIA’s soon-to-open residence hall and adjacent to MOCA Cleveland.

With live music selected by the Cleveland’s Beachland Ballroom, food trucks, and nearby restaurants and shopping, The Beat UPTOWN offers a good excuse to explore the city’s newest cultural neighborhood. Residents and visitors are encouraged to bring your blankets, chairs and appetites to the plaza on Thursdays, from 6-9pm.

The lineup of live entertainment through the end of the summer includes:

  • July 24 – Thaddeus Anna Greene
A blues rock force fronted by Collinwood grad, TJ Maclin, dubbed Cleveland’s young Jimi Hendrix.
  • July 31 – Meridian
Strong folk rock, penned by Heights native Max Stern, his brother, Jake, and friends.
  • August 7 – Maura Rogers and the Bellows
Intense soul-baring songs and delivery, softened with her accordion.
  • August 14 – Mayfield Strings Trio & Uno Lady
Cellist Tara Hanish brings a hybrid classical trio and Uno Lady joins with her unique solo rock/opera style.
  • August 21 – Fiscal Spliff
A 10-piece Afrobeat band featuring some of Cleveland’s finest players.
  • August 28 – Peelander-Z
This Japanese-American punk rock band and artist from NYC is just plain fun.

UPTOWN establishments will offer specials every Thursday, through August 28:

  • MOCA Cleveland: $5 general admission after 5pm. Summer 2014 season is funded by Skylight Financial Group.
  • ABC the Tavern: Full happy hour in the evening.
  • Cleveland Yoga: Happy hour yoga from 4:15-5:15pm. Cost is $5 to drop in and join the fun!
  • Wrapz Pita Bar: $5 wraps all day.
  • Anne van H. Boutique: Stop in to see her “cannot resist” new fall collection.

The Beat UPTOWN is a collaborative effort by Case Western Reserve University, The Cleveland Foundation, Toby Devan Lewis, MOCA Cleveland, Cleveland Institute of Art, MRN, LTD. and Skylight Financial Group. Free event parking in designated UPTOWN lots will be available after 5:00pm every Thursday.
