Influential Painter Clarence Morgan Visits March 15

Come to the Cleveland Institute of Art on March 15, 2011 to hear Clarence Morgan: Inspiration from a Painter's Notebook.

Discover the creative inner workings of Clarence Morgan at the Cleveland Institute of Art on Tuesday, March 15 at 7pm as the artist shares the ideas from his artist’s notebook that inspire his work. This free public presentation “Inspiration from a Painter’s Notebook” will take place at the Cleveland Institute of Art’s Aitken Auditorium.

Morgan, a professor of art at the University of Minnesota, makes great use of pattern, applied with stencils or painted freehand in his work. His paintings are built up of impasto deposits of acrylic paint applied with squeegee and palette knife to canvas or paper. In contrast, his prints are known more for the simple elegance of line and the translucent glow of color inks on paper.

Clarence Morgan’s paintings have been exhibited on a national and international scale. His work is included in the collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Art Institute, General Mills, and University of Alabama, among others. Morgan is a professor of painting in the Department of Art at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Last month’s talk by Nick Cave drew a packed house of more than 450 attendees—so don’t miss the next installment in CIA’s popular Bickford Visiting Artist series!
