Cleveland Institute of Art students present new exhibition 'Matters of Time'

March 30, 2021

CLEVELAND—Visual Arts students at the Cleveland Institute of Art are pleased to announce Matters of Time, an exhibition that will explore ways we make time tangible.

A year after COVID-19 upended their lives, these students consider the tradition of marking time and its renewed value. Taking from a list of anniversaries and associated materials, each artist will respond to an event and imbue it with new meanings. Viewers will experience these themes at the Waterloo Arts Cafe, a setting where occasions and anniversaries would be celebrated before the pandemic.

Matters of Time will open during a virtual reception from 7 to 8pm Friday, April 16. It will then be open for in-person viewing from noon to 6pm on Saturday, April 17 and from noon to 4pm Sunday, April 18 at Waterloo Arts Cafe, 15601 Waterloo Road in Cleveland. COVID safety protocols will be in effect. Details of the virtual opening reception will be announced via the exhibition's Instagram account, @MattersOfTimeShow. (Editor's note: The virtual opening reception will take place via this Google Meet link.)

The participating artists are Duriel Anderson, Ewuresi Archer, Mak Byerly, Paxton Enstad, Liana Gonzalez, Eliza Karp, Meg Lubey, Howe Fun Lye-Starks, Lucian Mykel, Jay Peperone, Alyssa Radakovic, David Ross, Sebastian Schenz and Owen Tollon. All are juniors taking CIA's The Role of the Artist as Producer course.

In that course, students discuss, collaborate and execute an exhibition with faculty guidance. Students actively participate in various models of artistic production, including performer, activist, curator and provocateur. Students locate venues, market and curate while they simultaneously create multiple works for the exhibition. Students work within committees to delegate, communicate and collaborate, creating a flourishing and well-thought-out exhibition that reflects this specific group of artists.
