ThinkCraft: Fresh Takes to open November 1

As part of a yearlong focus on contemporary craft, the Cleveland Institute of Art will present ThinkCraft: Fresh Takes, an invitational exhibition of works by CIA alumni whose glass, ceramics, metal and jewelry speak to 21st-century themes and practices.

The show runs November 1 through December 14, 2018 in CIA's Reinberger Gallery. The opening reception will be from 6 to 8pm at the Cleveland Institute of Art, 11610 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, 44106. Admission is free.

The definition of “craft” perpetually changes, and today includes centuries-old handmade goods as well as works that encompass performance, commercial design, socially engaged work, and objects created through digital technology and hybrid processes. This evolution challenges artists, audiences, and collectors to rethink the meaning of "craft," and to revisit ideas about where craft ends and where design and fine art begin.

The artists featured in Fresh Takes resist old-fashioned ideas about craft. The works themselves offer a glimpse into the complexity of what it means to be a contemporary maker.

Exhibiting artists are Pamela Argentieri, Jessica Calderwood, Lisa Clague, Nate Cotterman, Uri Davillier, Chris Genter, Kirk Lang, N2 Clay (Nicci Winrock and Neal Barman), Leana Quade, Kari Russell-Pool, Kevin Snipes, Demi Thomloudis, and Thaddeus Wolfe.

Gallery hours:
10am-5pm Monday through Thursday
10am-9pm Friday
Noon to 5pm Saturday and Sunday
