Add event to my calendar

Join us at Waterloo Arts on Friday, April 1 for the opening of It Tastes Like Cotton Candy, an exhibition of paintings by Jordi Rowe, a junior Painting major.

Rowe's paintings seek to provide breathing room in today’s hectic world by alluding to the choices of a simpler time, when choosing and eating too much candy was a potential worst outcome. During these last few years, the artist has sought solace from the effects of the pandemic by creating safe spaces through painting. These large-scale vistas in candy colors, reminds viewers that even small decisions, like choosing a candy, begins in us. In contemplating the work, the point drives home that self-care, like candy choice, rests solely in our hands, if we so decide.

The large size and materiality coupled with the bright, glossy palettes invites viewers to decipher how the paintings are created, providing a visual playground and a shifting of perspective.

An opening reception will take place on Friday, April 1 at from 6 to 9pm during the district’s monthly Walk All Over Waterloo event. The exhibition runs through April 30. Masks are required inside the gallery. Visitors may find more information about the event on Waterloo Arts’ website or on its Facebook event page.

Jordi Rowe organized this exhibition as part of the Cleveland Institute of Art Creativity Works program, supported by the Fenn Educational Fund and the G.R. Lincoln Family Foundation.
