Artists Kaitlyn McKanna, Ash Sark, Samantha Schneider and Amani Williams
Join us for the virtual opening of Doing a Gender, featuring new work by Kaitlyn McKanna (DRG), Ash Sark (DRG/PTG), Samantha Schneider (DRG/PTG) and Amani Williams (DRG). Initially planned for an in-person exhibition, Doing a Gender has been reconfigured for the web, and will be launched during a Google Meet Saturday, July 18 at 6pm.
Doing a Gender examines, poses questions, and challenges how gender is viewed in mass culture today. According to the artists, “The exhibition will explore how seeing gender identity is not concrete, but rather fluid and ever-changing, according to the way in which we present ourselves at any given moment. Representation affects us deeply; how does the media we grew up watching show us how not to perform our gender? In making and exhibiting these works, we encourage the audience to consider how they view traditional representations of gender.”
Doing a Gender was organized through CIA’s Creativity Works program, designed to create self-initiated real-world experiences for students in the visual arts and craft majors, and is supported by the generosity of the GR Lincoln Family Foundation and the Fenn Educational Fund of the Cleveland Foundation.
