Shown in the Ann and Norman Roulet Student + Alumni Gallery
The bathroom is a liminal space where we are forced to confront our identity and corporeal forms, while at the same time it can be a place to escape into the tactile pleasures of one’s body. The sensory aesthetics of the bathroom; the colors of the toothpaste, the soft lights, and the translucent colored soap gels which contrast the often pungent odors of the toilet are what fuel our existence. The shower is a transcendental space within the bathroom with its white noise, the heat, and the diffused light through the plastic curtain all create an ambiance that inspires a spiritual level of being; cleanliness is next to godliness. The mirror is a place where one can confront their visage in a way that is often emotionally self-reflexive while also aesthetically critical. The bathroom is a place of health and well being both physically and as we see it, emotionally. Knowing full well that it is a space of privilege that is specific to the consumer culture that allows for its existence, we celebrate the delicate and critical beauty of the bathroom.back to events list
