What happens when you put millennial artists in a forest? The answers might surprise you!

View student work from Associate Professor Kevin Kautenburger’s fall 2016 class, Environment, Art + Engaged Practice.

The course was experiential in nature, with the students immersing themselves within the natural environment and using aspects of that experience as the basis of a self-proposed semester-long project. Students worked in close consultation with Kautenburger, Stefanie Verish, a geologist, and a host of visiting artists.

Participating students include:

  • Sage Byham ’18, Sculpture + Expanded Media
  • Spencer Cowan ’18, Industrial Design
  • Rebecca Konte ’17, Biomedical Art
  • Carolyn Merklein ’18, Animation
  • Katelyn Ostromek ’17, Biomedical Art
  • Jarod Perry-Richardson ’19, Illustration
  • Dagen Shellenberger ’18, Photography + Video
  • Austin Turner ’18, Painting
  • Marcella Verchio ’17, Biomedical Art

Look About Lodge, built in 1938 from 300 chestnut logs, features three stone fireplaces, and is adjacent to a breathtaking hemlock forest overlooking Sulphur Springs gorge.
