Where Cleveland Institute of Art, Reinberger Gallery
Cleveland Institute of Art's annual Student Independent Exhibition (SIE) will be on view from February 12 through March 19. Now in its 70th year, SIE is an honored tradition that’s never conventional. Organized entirely by students, who choose the jurors and mount the exhibition, SIE offers fresh, and sometimes surprising approaches to contemporary art. An opening reception will be held in CIA's Reinberger Gallery on Friday, February 12 from 6-9pm.
This year's distinguised judges are:
Leta Sobierajski is a multidisciplinary designer and art director based in New York City combining traditional graphic design elements with photography, art, and styling to create utterly unique visuals. Her work is incredibly diverse, ranging from conventional identities to brilliantly bizarre compositions. She studied graphic design at Purchase College and has been working independently since 2013. She has been recognized by Print Magazine for its annual New Visual Artists Review, selecting 20 international designers under the age of 30. Her client list includes AIGA, Bloomberg Businessweek, Digg, Google, IBM, Kiehl’s, Refinery 29, Renault, Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, Target, Tate Modern, and UNIQLO among many others. She is also an adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts. Leta Sobierajski's work has attracted coverage from the likes of Cool Hunting, DesignBoom, IdN, It's Nice That, Refinery29, and the New York Times T Style Magazine.
Born in 1983, Brooke Inman grew up in the small town of DeMotte, Indiana. Brooke is a nature enthusiast who loves animals, especially her cat (Ellie). She is currently adjunct faculty at University of Richmond in the Department of Art + Art History, and at Virginia Commonwealth University in the Painting + Printmaking Department. She also teaches printmaking in the Richmond community at Studio Two Three. Specializing in Intaglio, Screen Print, Zine-making, Drawing, and Color, Brooke received her BFA in Printmaking from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2006, and her MFA in Painting + Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2008.
Jesse McLean is a media artist utilizing collage both aesthetically and conceptually. Her video work employs highly recognizable appropriated material alongside more elusive sources and material generated by the artist. Motivated by a deep curiosity about human behavior and relationships, her work is concerned with both the power and the failure of the mediated experience to bring people together. Recent videos put pressure not only on the relationships that develop between viewer and subject, but also on the ways emotions are lived in an age of mediated experience. She has presented her work at museums, galleries, and film festivals worldwide, including the Mumok Cinema in Vienna, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Views from the Avant Garde at the New York Film Festival, CPH:DOX, Kassel Dokfest, Impakt, and the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis. She was the recipient of an International Critics Prize, (FIPRESCI Prize) at the Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen and a Jury Prize in the International Competition at the 2013 Videoex Festival. Her recent video I’m in Pittsburgh and It’s Raining was awarded first prize at the Onion City Experimental Film and Video Festival. She was a featured artist at the 2014 Flaherty Seminar.
