Cinematheque . Film Schedule . CALIGULA: THE ULTIMATE CUT
Cleveland premiere!
Italy, United States | 1979/2023 | Tinto Brass, Thomas Negovan
Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren, Peter O’Toole, and John Gielgud star in one of the most notorious movies ever made, a lavish, lascivious account of a deranged, decadent Roman emperor during the first century AD. Produced by Penthouse’s Bob Guccione (who inserted shots of explicit sex and violence to spice up the historical drama) and written by Gore Vidal (who sued Guccione and removed his name from the project), the porn epic has now been totally reimagined and overhauled by writer, producer, and art historian Thomas Negovan. Removing Guccione’s salacious inserts (as well as all footage included in the original film), Negovan sifted through 96 hours of alternative takes and deleted scenes to construct a new version of Caligula—one that restores McDowell and Mirren’s complete performances, and hews closer to Vidal’s script. This “ultimate cut” premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Cleveland premiere. No one under 18 admitted! 4K DCP. 178 min.
