Milestones of Pre-Revolution Iranian Cinema. New Digital Restoration!
KHESHT O AYENEH
Iran
| 1966 | Ebrahim Golestan
When an infant is abandoned in the back seat of a Tehran taxi cab, the cabbie’s efforts to find someone to care for the child expose the failures of Iranian society. They also create a rift between him and his girlfriend. The fiction debut by a major Iranian writer and documentarian “[melds] the influences of Persian poetry, 1960s European art cinema, and Wellesian expressionism [into] a devastating dissection of a society poisoned by fear, distrust, and patriarchal arrogance,” according to distributor Janus Films. “Iranian cinema’s first true modern masterpiece.” –Museum of Modern Art. Cleveland revival premiere. Subtitles. Scope DCP. 131 min.
