SHOESHINE film still

The wrenching neorealist masterpiece that Vittorio De Sica and screenwriter Cesare Zavattini made just before they collaborated on Bicycle Thieves won the first Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Set in Rome in the immediate aftermath of WWII, the movie focuses on two street kids—shoeshine boys—who run afoul of the law when they become involved in the black market. “If Mozart had written an opera set in poverty, it might have had this kind of painful beauty.” –Pauline Kael. Cleveland revival premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 93 min.
