| 1990 | György Fehér
Perhaps the greatest Béla Tarr film that the Hungarian master did not make, this moody, melancholy, monochrome mystery—by one of the producers of Tarr’s Sátántangó—is a little-known but stunning work of “slow cinema.” Set in a remote and desolate region of high mountains and deep forests, this minimalist, miserabilist masterpiece employs extremely long takes to explore a retired detective’s obsession with catching the killer of a young girl whose body is found in the woods one day. You can cut the sinister atmosphere with a knife. “I want to show to what extent the search for justice stands in ridiculous contrast to the eternity of nature.” –director György Fehér (1991). Cleveland revival premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 101 min.
