This French comedy classic is widely regarded as the greatest film by the popular and prolific playwright, screenwriter, and actor Sacha Guitry (1885-1957). It also inspired some of the leading lights of the French New Wave. In the movie, an aging, charismatic card sharp and petty thief (Guitry) sits in a café writing his memoirs. As he looks back over his eventful life, he explains how—for him—dishonesty was the best policy. Almost all of the action in the film is pantomimed to Guitry’s witty, charming, subversive voiceover. “A masterpiece of wit, style and invention.” –Holt Foreign Film Guide. Subtitles. 35mm. 83 min.
