DANCING THE TWIST IN BAMAKO

aka MALI TWIST; TWIST À BAMAKO
Canada, France, Italy, Mali, Senegal | 2022 | Robert Guédiguian

DANCING THE TWIST IN BAMAKO film still

Master French filmmaker Robert Guédiguian abandons his usual locale—contemporary Marseille—for a period piece set in early 1960s Mali, shortly after that African nation’s independence from France. It’s an optimistic, energetic, liberating time that’s mirrored by the American pop music suffusing the local dance clubs. Samba, an upbeat young man who works spreading the gospel of socialism throughout Mali, falls for Lara, an unhappy young village woman trapped in an arranged marriage, and the two move to Bamako, the country’s capitol. But the good vibrations cease when Lara’s brother and husband come to retrieve her. Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 129 min.

General admission $11; members, CIA & CSU I.D.holders, and those age 25 & under $8.
