PORTRAIT DE LA JEUNE FILLE EN FEU
France
| 2019 | Céline Sciamma
Voted the 30th best movie of all time in the 2022 Sight and Sound “greatest films” poll (the most recent movie in the top 100), this four-year-old work by French filmmaking phenom Céline Sciamma is set on a remote island in Brittany at the end of the 18th century. A young female painter (Noémie Merlant of Tár) has been commissioned to paint a wedding portrait of a wealthy young woman (Adèle Haenel), but her subject wants neither to pose nor to marry. A different love story ensues in this stunningly lit and photographed period piece. “A superbly elegant, enigmatic drama…I was on the edge of my seat.” –The Guardian (UK). Subtitles. DCP. 121 min.
