JAMES BALDWIN ABROAD: ISTANBUL - PARIS - LONDON

France, United Kingdom | 1968-73 | various directors

JAMES BALDWIN ABROAD film still

Here are three newly-restored documentary shorts about legendary Black American author James Baldwin: Sedat Pakay’s James Baldwin: From Another Place (1973); Terence Dixon’s Meeting the Man: James Baldwin in Paris (1970); and Horace Ové’s Baldwin’s N***** (1968), featuring Dick Gregory. This program “gives us an opportunity to examine [a] critical period in Baldwin’s adult life—to see how distance from his home country changed how the writer saw himself in relation to the world and helped him diagnose the unrelenting drama of American racism” (Hollywood Reporter). Cleveland premiere. DCP. Total 84 min.

General admission $11; members, CIA & CSU I.D.holders, and those age 25 & under $8.

Masks are currently optional for moviegoers, but still encouraged. Learn more under the “Face Coverings” section at cia.edu/covid.

As a reminder, filmgoers can park for free in Lot 73 and in the Institute's annex lot, and should enter CIA via nearby Entrance C. Click here for a map.
