Miyazaki’s Latest Feature!
KAZE TACHINU
France, Japan, United States
| 2013 | Hayao Miyazaki
The only Hayao Miyazaki feature never shown at the Cinematheque, the self-proclaimed “swan song” for the Oscar-winning Japanese animator of Spirited Away (he has since postponed his retirement) is a fictionalized biography of aircraft genius Jiro Horikoshi (1903-1982). Young Jiro dreams of flying. But when nearsightedness prevents him from becoming a pilot, he pivots to designing and engineering planes, becoming one of the best. “[An] elegiac, hauntingly beautiful historical drama…Miyazaki is at the peak of his visual craftsmanship here.” –Variety. Subtitles. DCP. 126 min.
