Here are new restorations of five celebrated short films by the legendary French director (born a century ago this year) who went on to make such ground-breaking features as Hiroshima Mon Amour and Last Year at Marienbad. Program includes: Paul Gauguin (1949); the Oscar-winning Van Gogh (1948); Guernica (1951), featuring art by Picasso; All the World’s Memory (1956), about the National Library of France; and The Song of Styrene (1958), a lyrical, satirical hymn to plastic. “If short films didn’t exist, Alain Resnais would have surely invented them.” –Jean-Luc Godard. Cleveland revival premiere. Subtitles. Total 79 min.
