ALMA’S RAINBOW

United States | 1994 | Ayoka Chenzira

ALMA’S RAINBOW film still

Rainbow, a teenage Black girl and part-time dancer living in 1990s Brooklyn with her mother Alma, is conflicted about her future. Should she follow the practical, prosaic path personified by her strait-laced mom, a beauty salon owner? Or is Alma’s free-spirited sister Ruby, an artist newly arrived from Paris after 10 years of living there, a more appealing role model—especially given Rainbow’s artistic leanings? Three decades after its debut, this neglected gem by an African-American indie filmmaker who never made another theatrical feature is finally getting the attention it deserves. “A gorgeous clarion call for our young Black girls.” –Ava DuVernay. Cleveland revival premiere. DCP. 85 min.

General admission $11; members, CIA & CSU I.D.holders, and those age 25 & under $8.

Face masks, though always recommended, must be worn by filmgoers only when the CDC’s community risk level for Covid in Cuyahoga County is HIGH. Visit cia.edu/covid for the current community risk level and see the “Face Coverings” section for our detailed mask requirements.

As a reminder, filmgoers can park for free in Lot 73 and in the Institute's annex lot, and should enter CIA via nearby Entrance C. Click here for a map.
