CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (DIRECTOR’S CUT)

United States | 1978/98 | Steven Spielberg

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND film still

Though most closely associated with Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, the late FX wizard Douglas Trumbull did some of his most sublime work in Steven Spielberg’s magnificent and moving tale of earthling/alien contact. We will show Spielberg’s preferred cut of his sci-fi masterpiece, which eliminates the misbegotten inside-the-mothership scenes from 1980’s Special Edition while retaining some of the other additions. Richard Dreyfuss and François Truffaut star. Cinematography by Vilmos Zsigmond; music by John Williams. 4K DCP. 137 min.

Special admission $11; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $8. No passes or twofers.

Important Covid requirement. All Cinematheque moviegoers must wear a mask for the duration of their visit. Learn more under the "Face Coverings" section at cia.edu/covid. As a reminder, filmgoers can park for free in Lot 73 and in the Institute's annex lot and should enter CIA via nearby Entrance C. Click here for a map.
