Film Classics in 35mm! Night and the City: Film Noir
United States | 1949 | Max Ophüls
One of four films made in Hollywood by the great German-French director Max Ophüls (Madame de…), this gripping noir melodrama focuses on an innocent young woman (Barbara Bel Geddes) who finds herself trapped in a marriage to a charismatic but increasingly crazy millionaire (Robert Ryan). (This monstrous character is reputedly modeled on Howard Hughes, who had treated Ophüls shabbily.) “[A] masterwork.” –Anthony Lane, The New Yorker. 35mm archive print! 88 min.
Special admission $13; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $10. No passes or twofers. 35mm preservation print courtesy of the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Preservation funding provided by The Film Foundation and the AFI/NEA Film Preservation Grants Program.
