Night and the City: Film Noir

NIGHT AND THE CITY (1950)

United States | 1950 | Jules Dassin

NIGHT AND THE CITY film still

When an ambitious American hustler (Richard Widmark) working for a sleazy nightclub owner in London double-crosses one too many of his partners, he finds himself running for his life through the city’s nightmarish, neo-expressionist streets. Jules (Rififi, Uptight) Dassin’s European directorial debut, made after he fled America’s anti-communist witch-hunt, is “a perfect fusion of mood and character” and “a work of emotional power and existential drama that stands as a paradigm of noir pathos and despair,” according to Andrew Dickos in Street with No Name: A History of the Classic American Film Noir. With Gene Tierney. DCP. 96 min.

Special admission $11; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $8. No passes or twofers.
