THE KID & EXPERIENCE

TADJREBE
Iran, United States | 1921/1973 | Charles Chaplin/Abbas Kiarostami

THE KID film still

This program includes two short features about orphans in big cities. The Kid is a stellar mix of slapstick and sentiment in which Charlie Chaplin’s tramp character adopts a mischievous but adorable foundling (Jackie Coogan). This landmark silent movie, the first feature that Chaplin directed and a huge box office hit, established the template for his subsequent features that also deftly blend comedy and pathos. 35mm. Music track. 53 min. The Kid will be followed by the first feature directed by the late Iranian master Abbas Kiarostami (1940-2016). Experience focuses on a 14-year-old boy who must fend for himself in Tehran. He works as an assistant in a photo studio. Amir Naderi, another major Iranian filmmaker, co-wrote the screenplay of this b&w movie that is almost a silent film with its dearth of dialogue and lack of music. Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 56 min.

Special admission $13; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $10. No passes or twofers.
