New 4K Restoration! The Haunted Cinematheque

POSSESSION

France, West Germany | 1981 | Andrzej Zulawski

 POSSESSION film still

Shorn of over 40 minutes when first released in the U.S. (and banned outright for a number of years in Britain), this bloody, over-the-top exercise in Grand Guignol stars Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani as a married couple going through a traumatic break-up. Arguments and furniture-smashing soon give way to self-mutilation, killings, and sex with doppelgangers (and with a tentacled monster created by Oscar-winning F/X master Carlo Rambaldi of E.T. and Alien fame). Adjani won both the César Award and the Best Actress prize at Cannes for her hysterical performance. “Begins at a head-banging pitch and builds to a state of genuine derangement.” –NY Times. No one under 18 admitted! In English. DCP. 124 min.

Special admission $11; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $8. No passes or twofers.

How we're keeping you safe from the Delta variant. The Cleveland Institute of Art is doing its utmost to keep you safe from transmitting or catching Covid. Masks are required for all filmgoers. Your temperature will be taken upon entering the building, and a wristband (handed out by security) must be worn while in the building. Social distancing is being maintained in the lobby, restrooms, and theater. In the auditorium, certain seats are blocked off, and capacity is reduced. Top-of-the-line MERV 15 air filters purify the air. Sanitation stations dot the premises.

We continue to accept both cash and credit cards at the box office. Temporarily there is no access to CIA's upper floors (including vending machines). Free parking is available in Lot 73 and the annex lot. (Both are off E. 117th St. south of Euclid Ave.) Entrance to the building is through Entrance C, off Lot 73, and Entrance A, on E. 116th St.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation!
