USEDOM: DER FREIE BLICK AUFS MEER
Germany | 2017 | Heinz Brinkmann

USEDOM: A CLEAR VIEW OF THE SEA film still

For Berliners, the Baltic island of Usedom was once the most luxurious destination for excursions within striking distance of the city. This is where imperial Germany’s grand health resorts were built. In his new documentary, director Heinz Brinkmann, who was born on Usedom, traces the eventful history of his island—talking about the magnificent villas on Europe’s longest beach promenade, about the expulsion of Jews by the Nazis, and about Usedom being split into a German and a Polish half after WWII. We meet colorful locals—a mayor, a farmer, a hotelier, a nudist, et al. “A charmingly quirky guide to [the filmmaker’s] island home.” –NY Times. Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. 95 min.
