The "Great Farewell" to Joseph Stalin, who ruled the Soviet Union from 1927 until his death on 3/5/53, is the subject of this new found-footage documentary from the Ukrainian director of My Joy. Unique color archival footage from March 1953, most of it previously unseen, presents Stalin's funeral, which was attended by tens of thousands, as the culmination of the dictator's cult of personality. With Nikita Khrushchev, Stalin's eventual successor. "A categorically weird, thrillingly immersive distillation of four days of official, cultish pomp and mourning for one of the 20th century’s biggest monsters." –L.A. Times. "Composed entirely of footage shot at the time in various parts of the Soviet Union, the film is a haunting amalgam of official pomp and everyday experience, the double image of a totalitarian government and the people in whose name it ruled." –NY Times. "Both as film and as history, State Funeral stands as a canonical work." –Variety. Cleveland theatrical premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 135 min.
