A RIVER CALLED TITAS

TITASH EKTI NADIR NAAM
Bangladesh, India | 1973 | Ritwik Ghatak

A RIVER CALLED TITAS film still

Voted the best Bangladeshi film of all time by both critics and moviegoers polled by the British Film Institute in 2002, Ritwik Ghatak’s elegiac epic focuses on the lives of fishermen on the banks of the Titas River in pre-Partition East Bengal. The eventful plot begins when one fisherman marries a young woman from another village and she is soon after abducted by river bandits. Yet Ghatak’s focus is not on melodrama but on the sweeping historical and sociological canvas (with mythological and religious overtones) he is painting to document a vanishing community and way of life. Ghatak (1925-1976) was probably the greatest of the five Indian filmmakers who were the focus of the Cleveland Cinematheque’s first-ever retrospective at the Cleveland Institute of Art in August 1986. Though we screened five of Ghatak’s features at that time, A River Called Titas was not one of them. (It was unavailable then and we never showed it subsequently). We offer it now as a 35th Anniversary event that looks back to that epochal first series. Cleveland revival premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 159 min.

Special admission $12; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $9. No passes or twofers.

Covid safety protocols. Though Governor DeWine has lifted many Covid restrictions throughout the state, the Cleveland Institute of Art is currently keeping its precautions in place and is assiduously enforcing them. Masks must be worn at all times. Temperatures will be checked upon entering the building. Wristbands will be handed out by security and must be worn while in the building. Social distancing will be maintained in the lobby, restrooms, and theater. In the auditorium, there will be one-way traffic flow and seating will be spaced out, with certain seats and rows blocked off. Sanitation/sterilization stations will dot the premises.

Boxoffice and building. Though we will continue to accept both cash and credit cards at the boxoffice, you will notice other temporary changes to our operation. There will be no access to CIA's upper floors (including vending machines), nor to the ground floor beyond the theater and lobby. Our community candy dish will be put away. The Annex parking lot will be closed, so park for free in Lot 73 (off E. 117th St. south of Euclid) and enter the building through Entrance C (the only entry door that will be open) off Lot 73.
