BEHIND THE STORY: A “CHERRY” FAMILY AFFAIR WITH THE RUSSOS

BEHIND THE STORY: A “CHERRY” FAMILY AFFAIR WITH THE RUSSOS banner

Northeast Ohio is deeply embedded in the DNA of Cherry, the first non-MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) feature film in a decade by native Clevelanders Anthony and Joe Russo. Based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Cleveland author Nico Walker, Cherry is not only set in Cleveland, it was also shot here. The movie’s screenplay was co-written by Angela Russo-Otstot, the Russo brothers’ sister (and another Clevelander). The film, which stars Tom Holland as an ex-Army medic who supports an opioid addiction by robbing Cleveland banks, will be streaming on Apple TV+ starting 3/12.

On that same Friday at 5:00 pm EST, the three Russos will answer questions about Cherry during a special live Zoom event co-organized by the Greater Cleveland Film Commission. WKYC’s Russ Mitchell will moderate the discussion, but many of the questions will come from you. At the start of the event, the three Russos will be awarded Honorary Doctor of Art degrees by Cleveland Institute of Art President + CEO Grafton Nunes in recognition of their extraordinary contributions to film, television, and their native Cleveland.

Tickets to this special program cost $20. (The proceeds will be split 50/50 between the Cinematheque and the Film Commission.) To buy a ticket—and submit a question for the Russos, if you want—click on the URL below. Capacity is limited. Those who register will be emailed their Zoom event link from the Greater Cleveland Film Commission on 3/12.

Special thanks to Seema Jayaswal and Juliana Johnson Piller of the Greater Cleveland Film Commission and Marian Koltai-Levine of Rogers & Cowan PMK.
