NOTTURNO

France, Germany, Italy | 2020 | Gianfranco Rosi

NOTTURNO film still

The new nonfiction film from Gianfranco Rosi (whose last movie was the indelible European migrant crisis documentary Fire at Sea) is Italy’s official submission for this year’s Oscar for Best Int’l Feature Film. Filmed over three years on the borders between Iraq, Kurdistan, Syria and Lebanon, this elegantly shot movie captures intimate moments from everyday lives impacted by civil wars, ruthless dictatorships, foreign invasions, and ISIS’ murderous behavior. “Rosi's genuine desire to understand the psychological reality of the region is not only morally admirable, it is artistically astonishing.” –The Globe and Mail. Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. 100 min.

Notturno, a Cinematheque streaming exclusive, can be viewed online from 1/22 thru 2/11 via the link below. Doing so supports the Cinematheque. Screening fee is $4.99, and you have 72 hours to watch it.

NOTE: This movie is not part of the four-film package of 2021 Best Int’l Feature Film Oscar submissions being released during January by Film Movement.
