Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche, and Ethan Hawke star in Hirokazu Kore-eda’s first film since his 2018 Cannes top prize winner Shoplifters. (It’s also his first film to be shot outside Japan, and the first not in his native language.) Deneuve plays Fabienne, a celebrated (and self-centered) French movie star whose daughter (Binoche), son-in-law (Hawke), and young granddaughter come to visit from New York. They arrive at the time of the publication of Fabienne’s memoir, which conveniently (and infuriatingly, to her daughter) omits or glosses over painful episodes in her mom’s storied (but imperfect) life. “[Kore-eda] offers yet another insightful look at the underlying fabric of a modern family.” –IndieWire.
