Paulo Rocha's second feature, like his first one The Green Years (see 8/14), has been restored and released in the U.S. for the first time. Made three years after his debut, the film focuses on a young Portuguese soldier who returns to his impoverished fishing village after fighting in Angola—only to discover that his girlfriend has married his brother. A scarily defiant woman becomes his new flame. Rocha’s moodily photographed docudrama is part Italian neorealism, part film noir. Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. 94 min.
