Brazil, France | 2019 | Juliano Dornelles, Kleber Mendonça Filho
The films of Sergio Leone, George Miller, John Carpenter, and Alejandro Jodorowsky are evoked in this singular genre mash-up and political parable set deep in the Brazilian sertão (or outback). A village whose 94-year-old matriarch has died suddenly finds itself cut off from the world. (It disappears from Google Maps and GPS systems, and all cellphones there stop working.) Things get even weirder with the sudden appearance of flying saucer-like drones and heavily armed American strangers… “Utterly distinctive film-making, executed with ruthless clarity and force.” –The Guardian. With Sônia Braga and Udo Kier; from the director of Aquarius. No one under 18 admitted! Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 131 min.
Though our theatrical screenings on 4/24 & 25 have been canceled (the film will be rescheduled after we reopen), Bacurau can be watched online thru 4/30 via the link below. Doing so supports the Cinematheque.
