Film Classics in 35mm! Pontecorvo Centenary. Original, Uncut Version!
France, Italy | 1969 | Gillo Pontecorvo
Here’s the original, uncut version of Gillo Pontecorvo’s explosive follow-up to his 1965 masterpiece Battle of Algiers—20 minutes longer than the American cut known as Burn! Marlon Brando plays Sir William Walker, a British agent provocateur sent to a Caribbean island in the mid-1800s to foment a slave revolt against the Portuguese overlords. A few years later he comes back to crush these same rebels. Pontecorvo’s visually stunning allegory of colonialism and capitalism had parallels to Vietnam in its day; sadly, it still resonates in ours. Music by Ennio Morricone. “(A) luxuriant, ecstatic epic told from a neo-Marxist, Frantz Fanonian point of view.” –Pauline Kael. Italian with subtitles. (Brando’s voice is dubbed.) 132 min.
Special event pricing $12; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $9. No passes, twofers, or radio winners.
