We mark the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day with one of the greatest of all First World War movies, winner of the 1930 Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director. Lew Ayres plays a German schoolboy whose heroic notions of nationalism and fighting are soon dispelled by the horrible realities of trench warfare. Though based on a German novel by Erich Maria Remarque, the film was banned in Deutschland by Hitler and the Nazis. DCP. 133 min.
