Film Classics in 35mm! Ingmar Bergman 100: Happy Birthday!
aka THE RITUAL; RITEN
Sweden | 1969 | Ingmar Bergman
Today would have been Ingmar Bergman’s 100th birthday. To commemorate the occasion, we show a rarity by the great director that is available in this country only on film. The Rite was Bergman’s first movie made specifically for television (but it was also released to theaters). Gunnar Björnstrand and Ingrid Thulin portray the married heads of a theatrical troupe that has been hauled in front of a judge on an obscenity charge. This penetrating work examines the relationship between actors and audiences, as well as the dislocation between performers’ private and public lives. Cinematography by Sven Nykvist. Subtitles. 73 min.
