A Special Event! Film Classics in 35mm!
Denmark, Sweden | 2011 | Lars von Trier
Winner of the European Film Award for best film of 2011, Lars von Trier’s apocalyptic fantasy is a visually stunning drama with an all-star cast: Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, et al. The film follows two sisters at a disastrous dusk-to-dawn wedding reception at a lavish estate. After the party, they remain on the property as a rogue planet hurtles toward earth on a possible collision course. This moody movie memorably employs music from Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde. In English. Scope print! 136 min.
NOTE: Philippe Garrel's The Virgin's Bed, the film announced for this slot in our printed March-April schedule, has been moved to 2:15 pm today. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Special admission $11; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $8. No passes, twofers, or radio winners.
The presentation of Melancholia is in collaboration with The Cleveland Orchestra as part of Music Director Franz Welser-Möst’s festival The Ecstasy of Tristan and Isolde. The festival is a special two-week series of concerts revolving around performances of Wagner’s ultra-Romantic opera Tristan and Isolde, Welser-Möst explores the depths and wonder of ecstasy — in a journey toward transcendence and understanding, through music, art, and belief. This festival is part of the Orchestra’s historic 100th season.
