His quaint “country boy” charm soon gives way to amorality, ruthlessness, and an unquenchable thirst for power. This prescient fable about the dangers of mass media in American society marked a second collaboration for the director (Elia Kazan) and writer (Budd Schulberg) of On the Waterfront.
