Goodbye to Language

Adieu au Language
France | 2014 | Jean-Luc Godard

There are 3D movies made by Hollywood and then there is this new 3D movie made by cinema’s foremost radical and provocateur, Jean-Luc Godard. Let’s just say that you’ve never seen film 3D like this before! Like most recent Godard movies, Goodbye to Language is a collage of images, music, sound effects, and voiceover narration incorporating the filmmaker’s standard tropes and stylistic devices: men, women, and guns; a barrage of allusions to history, literature, and movies; bursts of classical music; cryptic cultural aphorisms; on-screen puns and wordplay; a murder (maybe); and, unique to this film, a dog who is the most sympathetic character. A sensation at Cannes, this is one of the film events of the year! “A characteristically vigorous, playful, mordant commentary on everything from the state of movies to the state of the world from French cinema’s oldest living enfant terrible…69 densely packed minutes that feel like an adrenaline shot to the brain.” –Variety
