France | 1999 | Claire Denis
Inspired by Melville’s Billy Budd, Claire Denis’ lavishly praised masterpiece is set among French Foreign Legionnaires in Djibouti, East Africa. It focuses on a drill sergeant (Denis Lavant) who vows to destroy a sterling young recruit (Grégoire Colin) of whom he is jealous. The elaborately choreographed military training sequences, shot under the scorching sun, are beautiful and unforgettable. In fact, the whole movie is balletic and bursting with sensuality. New 35mm color print from France!
Subtitles. 90 min. Special thanks to Laura Pertuy and Delphine Selles, Cultural Services of the French Embassy, New York.
