The Chromatic Typewriter

04/01/13  |  Posted by  |  Posted in Digital Creativity

The Chromatic Typewriter, by Tyree Callahan, is a conceptual art machine that creates oil pastel paintings with every keystroke! Constructed in 2012, Tyree took an old Underwood Standard typewriter and modified it to produce colored marks rather than type with each keystroke. By replacing each of the letter heads and key pads with oil pastels and corresponding key pad covers, Tyree created the first Chromatic Typewriter! In 2012, this new art making tool was entered into the 2012 West Prize competition and was a huge hit with the public, becoming one of the most popular products online! Tyree has also begun to collaborate with Jack Zylkin0, creator of the USB Typewriter in 2010. They have started plans to combine these two products with the hopes of come up with a USB typewriter that can also produce digital paintings on the iPad! Tyree’s Chromatic Typewriter is a conceptual art machine, you can’t purchase a machine directly, but you can buy prints of the work that the machine produces at TwistedSifter.com!
